Music
What We Study
Music at Newlands places practical music making at the heart of learning. Through performance, composition, listening and singing, students explore music as a universal language and one of the highest forms of creativity. We aim to inspire a love of music, nurture talent and develop the skills and qualities that help students grow as musicians and as individuals.
Our Facilities
The Music Department is housed in a bespoke building with two teaching rooms, six practice rooms (each equipped with pianos, a drum kit and an amplifier), a large rehearsal room and a recording studio. Students also have access to specialist software such as Sibelius, Musescore and SoundTrap. Our wide range of instruments includes djembes, guitars, keyboards, percussion and steel pans.
Key Stage 3
Students experience a broad and varied curriculum, exploring music from different styles, genres and cultures. They develop practical skills, perseverance and problem solving through ensemble work and independent practice. Performing to peers builds confidence, while composition encourages creativity and critical thinking. Collaboration, communication and resilience are central to their musical development.
Key Stage 4 & Key Stage 5 (GCSE & A Level Music)
At GCSE and A Level, students build on the strong foundations of KS3. They refine their performance and composition skills, deepen their understanding of musical theory and analysis, and study a wide range of repertoire. Results are consistently excellent, with many students progressing to study Music at university.

Leadership & Enrichment
Student leadership is central to our vision. Ensemble Captains help run groups and support younger musicians, fostering confidence, responsibility and community. We pride ourselves on being inclusive, ensuring every student has the opportunity to participate, perform and grow as a musician.
