Curriculum

Learning at Newlands

Our curriculum is designed to give every student a broad, ambitious and engaging learning experience. We want students to discover what they love, develop strong knowledge and skills, and feel confident about the next steps in their education.

Students study a wide range of subjects that offer challenge, enrichment and opportunities to grow. Using the National Curriculum as a foundation, our specialist teachers plan lessons that stretch, support and inspire — whatever a student’s starting point, including those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

In Years 7 to 9, students build on what they learned at primary school while exploring new subjects and interests. This creates a strong foundation for future study and helps students identify their strengths.

Subjects studied include:

Core Foundations: English, Mathematics, Religious Studies

Global Perspectives: Geography, History, PSHE

Languages: French, German, Spanish

Creative & Expressive: Fine Art, Drama, Music

STEM: Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Design & Technology (Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles), Computing

Physical & Practical: Physical Education

Our pastoral and PSHE programmes run alongside academic learning, helping students develop confidence, resilience and the personal skills they need for life beyond the classroom.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)

Key Stage 4 gives students the chance to focus on the subjects they enjoy most while continuing to build strong foundations in core academic areas.

In Years 10 and 11, all students study English Language, English Literature and Mathematics, alongside Science, which leads to either a Combined Science qualification or Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).

Students then choose four additional GCSE subjects from a broad and balanced range. To support a well rounded curriculum, most students select at least one Modern Foreign Language and one Humanity.

Core Foundations: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics

Global Perspectives: Geography, History, Religious Studies

Languages: French, German, Spanish

Creative & Expressive: Art, Drama, Music

STEM: Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Design & Technology, Food & Nutrition, Computing, Business Studies

Physical & Practical: Physical Education

Alongside examined subjects, students continue with core PE, RS and PSHE, which provide important opportunities for personal development, wellbeing and wider learning.

KS5 & Sixth Form at Newlands

Our Sixth Form is a vibrant and ambitious community where students are encouraged to specialise, explore new interests and take confident steps towards their future. The curriculum offers depth, challenge and flexibility, allowing every student to shape a programme of study that reflects their strengths and aspirations.

Most students choose three A Level subjects, with the option to study a fourth. You can also combine A Levels with BTEC courses, creating a pathway that suits your goals. Our timetables are built around student choices, giving you the freedom to pursue the subjects you are most passionate about.

Teaching takes place in small groups, creating a focused, supportive environment similar to university seminars. Students also have the opportunity to complete the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is highly valued by universities and employers.

Subjects offered include:

Literature, Language & Mathematics: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Further Mathematics

Global Perspectives: Geography, History, Government & Politics, Religious Studies

Languages: French, German, Spanish

Creative & Expressive: Fine Art, Photography, Theatre Studies, Dance, Music

STEM: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Design & Technology, Economics, Business

Physical & Practical: Physical Education

Academic Progression and Destinations

We are proud of the strong outcomes achieved by our Sixth Form students. Each year, the majority progress to university, including a significant number securing places at Russell Group institutions and on competitive courses. Others choose degree apprenticeships or specialist pathways, supported by expert guidance throughout the application process.

Support and Guidance

Students benefit from a dedicated Sixth Form Team and an experienced Careers Leader, who provides personalised advice, workshops and a full programme of events to help students explore higher education and career options. Our pastoral support ensures students feel confident, supported and ready for the transition to adulthood.

Beyond the Classroom

Learning at Newlands extends far beyond the curriculum. Across all year groups, students are encouraged to explore new interests, develop confidence and take part in the wider life of the school.

We offer a rich programme of clubs, societies, sports, creative opportunities and leadership roles that help students broaden their experience and discover new passions. At the start of each year, students visit our Clubs Fair, where they can meet staff and student leaders, try out activities and sign up for the things that excite them.

Whether it’s performing arts, STEM challenges, sports teams, debating, creative arts, volunteering or student leadership, there is something for everyone — and every student is encouraged to get involved.

These experiences help students build friendships, develop independence and grow into confident, well rounded young people who contribute positively to our school community.
