Design & Technology

What We Study

Design & Technology encourages students to think creatively, solve problems and understand how products are designed and made. Through practical work and thoughtful design processes, students explore materials, techniques and real world applications. The curriculum builds independence, resilience and the ability to turn ideas into functional outcomes.

Key Stage 3

Students rotate through DT, Textiles and Food, developing practical skills and design thinking. They learn how to use tools safely, explore different materials and understand how products are developed. The curriculum encourages creativity, curiosity and hands on learning.

Key Stage 4 – Design & Technology

GCSE DT deepens students’ understanding of materials, technical principles and design processes. They develop ideas, model solutions and create a final prototype as part of their NEA. The course helps students think critically, solve problems and communicate their ideas effectively.

Key Stage 4 – Food Preparation & Nutrition

GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition explores nutrition, food science and practical cooking. Students learn how ingredients work, how to prepare dishes safely and how to plan balanced meals. They complete two NEA assessments that develop their investigative and practical skills.

Beyond the Classroom

The D&T department offers a rich programme of trips that help students connect their classroom learning to real industries, creative environments and professional practice. In Design and Technology, students visit the Mini factory in Oxford, where they tour the manufacturing plant and see robotics and automation in action, gaining a first hand understanding of modern production processes. Year 7 students explore mechanisms and construction methods through a behind the scenes workshop at the Harry Potter Studio Tour, while Year 8 students take part in an inspiring design challenge at Verizon in Reading, meeting women working in the tech industry and presenting their ideas to industry judges.

In Food Preparation and Nutrition, students experience the food industry through visits such as the Handmade Cake Company in Maidenhead, where they learn about hygiene standards, quality control and product development. Year 10 students also visit Waltham Place to explore food provenance, sustainability and traditional food production, including hands on activities such as making butter and flour. These experiences help students understand how design, engineering and food science operate in the real world, enriching their learning and broadening their aspirations.
