Modern Foreign Languages (French, German & Spanish)
What We Study
At Newlands, every student has the opportunity to learn French, German and Spanish from the start of their seven year journey. Languages are central to our curriculum and to our school culture: they broaden horizons, build confidence and prepare students to communicate in an increasingly global and multilingual world.
Students learn to listen, speak, read and write with increasing accuracy and spontaneity. They develop strong grammatical understanding, cultural awareness and the courage to communicate without fear of making mistakes.
Why Languages Matter
French, German and Spanish are spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe, Africa, the Americas and beyond. They open doors to travel, study and work, and connect students to rich cultural traditions — from literature and art to science, diplomacy and global business.
We celebrate these core European languages alongside the many home languages spoken within our diverse school community.
How We Teach
Lessons take place in our dedicated languages building, where students enjoy discovering new vocabulary, exploring grammar and developing real communication skills. Topics such as school life, local area, environment, hobbies and future plans provide meaningful contexts for language learning.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge year on year — from understanding noun genders in KS3 German, to mastering the passé composé in KS4 French, to using the pluperfect subjunctive in KS5 Spanish. Grammar is taught in an accessible, supportive way for learners of all abilities.
Students are supported by specialist teachers and foreign language assistants who help them develop confidence, fluency and cultural understanding.
Key Stage 3
Students study all three languages, building strong foundations in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. They develop curiosity, resilience and the confidence to communicate in another language, becoming open minded and culturally aware learners.
Key Stage 4 (GCSE Languages)
Students deepen their understanding of grammar, expand their vocabulary and learn to express opinions, describe experiences and discuss real world issues. They develop the skills needed to communicate clearly and confidently in spoken and written tasks.
Key Stage 5 (A Level Languages)
Students explore language in greater depth, studying authentic texts, films and cultural themes. They refine their grammatical accuracy, develop sophisticated communication skills and gain a deeper understanding of the societies where the language is spoken.
Beyond the Classroom
Students studying Modern Foreign Languages enjoy a rich programme of cultural and linguistic experiences that help them develop confidence, curiosity and a genuine appreciation of life beyond the UK. Our annual trip to Strasbourg and Freiburg im Breisgau gives students in Years 8, 9 and 10 the chance to practise their French and German in authentic settings while exploring two beautiful European cities, including a memorable day at Europa Park. Throughout the year, students take part in events that celebrate the diversity of our school community, such as the European Day of Languages, where students share their heritage and speak in their mother tongues during whole school assemblies. Creative activities like the Year 7 Advent Calendar competition bring language learning to life, while our inter house quiz, led by sixth form language prefects, fosters teamwork and friendly competition.
Students also enjoy annual theatre performances delivered in French, German or Spanish by native speakers, helping them experience language in a lively and accessible way. Opportunities to connect with young people abroad are offered through pen pal exchanges with partner schools in Germany, France and Spain, giving students a meaningful way to use the language they are learning. For older students, our long standing German Exchange provides an immersive experience living with host families and exploring cities such as Cologne, offering invaluable linguistic and personal development. These experiences nurture intercultural understanding, resilience and a lifelong love of languages and travel.
